What can noise do?

Reduce perceived noise by up to 99%

A proper sound insulation can only be achieved when all components play well together. The final sound insulation factor depends on the weakest element. Therefore it’s important to take all factors such as glass, profile and installation into consideration.

If the sound level (volume) drops by 10 dB, it is perceived as half as loud.

Conversely, if the sound level increases by 10 dB, it is perceived as twice as loud.

By subtracting the recommended indoor noise level from the typical outdoor noise level, you can estimate the appropriate acoustic performance for your windows.

Example calculation

1. External noise source: 76 dB (road traffic)
2. Desired room noise level: 35 dB (bedroom)
= The difference is 41 dB

Terms and definitions

Rw [dB] is the weighted sound reduction index

Rw + C [dB] rating includes an adaptation for mid to higher frequency noise sources such as speech, so called “pink noise”, integrated into a single number as outlined in EN ISO 717-1.

Rw + Ctr [dB] rating includes an adaptation which considers lower frequencies noise sources such as aircraft (on land), trains and automobiles and integrated into a single number as outlined in EN ISO 717-1.

STC [Sound Transmission Class] The STC rating was created to provide a single number rating for interior building partitions that are subjected to interior noises such as speech, electronic devices, office equipment and other mid to high frequency noise sources. STC ratings are calculated in accordance with ASTM E413 over the frequency range of 125 to 4000 hertz.

OITC [Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class] The OITC rating was created to provide a single number rating for facades and facade elements in relation to exterior noise from aircraft, trains, automobiles, and other low to mid frequency noise sources. OITC ratings are calculated in accordance with ASTM E1332 over the frequency range of 80 to 4000 hertz.

The sound reduction is only as strong as the weakest building element. It is necessary to check the sound reduction values of windows, wall and roofing as a whole.
